Retirement guidance

A sequence for questions that do not fit in a single box.

Italian pension questions often combine a personal contribution record, rules that change over time and work carried out in more than one system. Work through them in that order.

Step 01 / record

Read the contribution record before the forecast.

The INPS Contributions Account Statement lists the periods recorded for you across relevant pension schemes. Use it to check dates, work categories and annotations. If a period looks wrong, note the issue and use the official correction route; do not assume an estimate will repair the underlying record.

Close to retirement? INPS also describes a certified account statement that can carry legal value.

Step 02 / timing

Match the rule to the contribution history.

The current INPS old-age page distinguishes between people with contributions before 1 January 1996 and those whose first contribution is later. It also lists exceptions and special cases. That is why a headline retirement age cannot determine an individual result.

Where available for your scheme, INPS's My Future Pension service can compare scenarios using the legislation in force, age, work history and salary or income. It remains a simulation, not a guarantee.

Step 03 / borders

Put every country on the timeline.

If you worked in several EU countries, rights may arise in more than one. EU guidance says a claim is normally started in the country where you live, or in the country where you last worked if you never worked in your country of residence. Each country can apply its own pensionable age and calculate its part separately.

Your Europe recommends asking for information at least six months before retirement for multi-country claims because the process can be lengthy.

Step 04 / decision

Turn uncertainty into a defined request.

A focused request identifies the exact decision you are preparing to make. It also separates facts you can verify from questions that require an official authority or suitably qualified professional.

Questions worth carrying into a consultation

  • Which INPS scheme or combination of schemes appears in my record?
  • Which contribution periods need correction or formal confirmation?
  • Which current rule set may be relevant to my history, and what are the exceptions?
  • Does work in another country change the authority, timing or evidence required?
  • Which parts of my question are pension, tax, residence or legal issues and should be handled separately?
